Physics Dept laboratoriesAll laboratories are located either in specially modulated spaces in the Physics Dept. or in the open field experimental facility of the campus of the University of Athens. The Group is equipped with all the necessary infrastructure to perform experimental studies on the field of energy and environmental quality of the build environment.

The Laboratory of Energy audits and energy efficient design of buildings, is specialized on energy and environmental assessments in the built environment and performs specific studies to improve the energy and environmental performance of buildings. It has all the necessary equipment to support experimental and theoretical studies including infrared cameras, luminance cameras, tracer gas equipment, equipment to measure U values in situ, equipment to measure thermal and visual comfort, apparatus to measure all climatic parameters etc.

The equipment can be fitted in a modern mobile energy bus, equipped with a 20 m high telescopic mast, where sensors may be placed at any height. The group has carried out more than a thousand energy audits and studies aiming to improve the energy efficiency of buildings in Greece and abroad.

Intelligent environmental materials lab

The Intelligent environmental materials lab performs experimental research on the development of spectrally selective and optically intelligent materials. Research is oriented towards the development of materials for heat island and climate change mitigation purposes. It carries out theoretical and experimental research and has developed materials presenting thermochromic properties for the outdoor environment and also materials presenting extremely high reflectivity and appropriate emmissivity, using nanotechnology techniques.

The experimental facilities of the group involve two advanced spectrophotometers, able to measure the optical properties of materials in the range between 0.1 to 80 μm. Also sophisticated equipment carrys out ageing tests according to International standards. Moreover, equipment for measuring the emissivity of materials and their color properties is available and used by the group. The group collaborates with major research institutes like LBL, Tokyo Polytechnic, NUS, etc, while it has undertaken important research contracts from major international industrial and research organizations, on the development of advanced environmental materials like DAIKIN Japan, Huntsman, etc.

Finally, the Group assumes the presidency of the European Cool Roof Council, involving all major European Industrial bodies on environmental materials.

Laboratory of Daylighting and Solar Radiation

Laboratory of Daylighting and Solar Radiation

The Laboratory of Daylighting and Solar Radiation is equipped with an artificial sky facility as well as with a solar radiation measurement facility, able to scan radiation at various tilts and azimuths. The lab disposes all equipment to measure the major lighting parameters, such as global illuminance, point luminance, field luminance and colour  coordinates.

The main activities of the Lab focus on the experimental optimisation of daylight components in buildings, the testing and the development of fiber optic elements and other innovative lighting systems, as well as on the experimental documentation of the solar radiation components.

Laboratory of Intelligent buildings

Laboratory of Intelligent buildings

The Laboratory of Intelligent buildings is composed by two similar test cells fully equipped to measure and control almost all climatic or energy parameters in buildings. The cells are equipped with the European Intelligent bus. The two cells are used for comparative testing of different control strategies aiming to improve the environmental quality of buildings and decrease their energy consumption. Also, the lab is used to test e-management techniques for the intelligent control of buildings.

Laboratory of Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality

The Laboratory of Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality involves all the necessary equipment to carry out specific ventilation and indoor air quality measurements. It combines multiple and single tracer gas equipment with an air chromatographer, and advanced indoor pollutants measurement equipment. Moreover, the lab owns air flow visualisation equipment, as well as equipment to measure the air speed and flow in indoor and outdoor environments.

The lab has very high experience in natural ventilation experiments and is equipped with a blower door facility to perform research and

development work related to air infiltration and transfer of pollutants between the ambient and indoor environment. Indoor air quality research is carried out using a very modern GCMS facility for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of indoor pollutants. The facility permits the performance of complex experiments, while in collaboration with the tracer gas equipment it offers full research capabilities.
